What to do when…
1)
You are Skidding Out of Control
a. The
expression ‘turn into the skid’ tends to confuse drivers, instead take your
foot off the gas, pick a focal point down the road and try to gently steer your
vehicle there. Do not over steer or throw the vehicle to the left or right.
Slamming on the brakes should also be avoided as it tends to make the skid
worse.
2)
You are Experiencing a Blow Out
a. Hold
the steering wheel firmly in both hands and take your foot off the gas.
Slamming on the brakes can lead to losing control of the vehicle so let it slow
down naturally.
3)
You Get in an Accident
a. If
your car is drivable, move it to the side of the road. Exchange registration
and insurance information, driver’s licenses and phone numbers. If the other
person does not have this information, call the police complaint line at
(780)423-4567. If the combined damage of the vehicle is over $2,000 dollars you
must report the accident to the police.
4)
It is Foggy Outside
a. First
off, slow down. Fog not only reduces you visibility but it leaves the roads
wet. Turn on your fog lights if you have them or your low beams. Never use
bright lights as they will reflect back at you.
5)
You are in a School Zone
a. Alberta
recently reduced the speed limit in school areas to 30km/h. This is enforced
during school days from 8AM to 5PM. Playground areas also fall under the 30km/h
zone with the time being from “dusk to dawn”. Drivers caught going speeds
between 31-50 km/h can be fined up to $196, with prices escalating as speed
increases.
6)
It is Heavily Raining
a. Slow
down and try to follow in the tracks on the person ahead of you to gain better
traction. Just like with fog, use you low beams in heavy rain to increase
visibility and stop the light from reflecting back at you.
