GMC Innovation Continues with 2020 Sierra 1500

GMC Innovation Continues with 2020 Sierra 1500

New cameras, conveniences and configurations for Professional Grade customers

GMC is taking premium to the next level with all new availability for a carbon fiber bed, 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel and 10 speed automatic transmission, plus additional technology like Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera to elevate the ownership experience in the 2020 Sierra 1500. The updates add to a robust portfolio of technologies that deliver an innovative and premium ownership experience.

“The Sierra is delivering the tech customers want in the light-duty truck market, and the 2020 model demonstrates that Professional Grade means never slowing down,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. “In just its first year on the market, the 2019 Sierra introduced the available, industry-first MultiPro tailgate. The truck’s 2020 updates show how the Sierra continues to raise the bar year in and year out.”

The Sierra 1500’s updates include the following:

  • Available Enhanced ProGrade Trailering features a segment-first transparent trailer view, originally introduced on the soon-to-launch 2020 Sierra HD, with a segment-leading 15 total available camera views.
  • Available Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera.
  • 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel and the CarbonPro Editions with the carbon fiber bed.
  • 10-speed automatic transmission availability expands to 5.3L V-8 models (SLT, AT4 and Denali models with 4WD).
  • New trailer tow mirrors are available as a free-flow option.
  • 8-inch-diagonal infotainment system now capable of supporting SiriusXM with 360L (if equipped).

Class-leading towing technology

The GMC Sierra already features an innovative suite of towing technologies that enable an exceptional light-duty towing experience. For 2020, the Sierra 1500 will be available with the upgraded ProGrade Trailering System introduced earlier this year on the 2020 Sierra HD. The updated system brings more camera views and in-vehicle Trailering App enhancements designed to simplify and streamline the trailering process.

The ProGrade Trailering System now features an available class-leading 15 unique camera views, including a segment-first transparent trailer view to help optimize the driver’s view around the truck and compatible trailers to provide added confidence when towing. New for 2020, the available transparent trailer view uses the tailgate-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer. The resulting display helps the driver to virtually see through the trailer, benefiting drivers when navigating parking lots, merging into traffic and making tight turns.

The in-vehicle Trailering App has updated features and enhanced mobile integration for 2020. Owners will now be able to create and edit trailer profiles through the myGMC mobile app and load them into their Sierra, saving time when hooking up for the first time. Owners will also have the option of making a trailer profile shareable for easy transfer of trailer specs. The in-vehicle Trailering App will now also send maintenance reminders and trailer mileage information to an owner’s phone, available for viewing through the myGMC mobile app.

Also new for 2020, the Sierra 1500 will feature available smart trailer technology designed to allow access to select features of the iN∙Command Control System from ASA Electronics through the myGMC mobile app, either on compatible Android and iOS smartphones or on the vehicle’s infotainment system via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. Depending on how a compatibly equipped trailer is configured, owners of the 2020 Sierra 1500 may be able to turn on the trailer’s air conditioning or water heater, check water and holding tank levels, or monitor fuel levels on trailers equipped with generators — all before arriving at their destination.

Technology enhancements

For 2020, the Sierra also receives Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera available on SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels. The system features a single high-mounted camera behind the rear-view mirror and can bring the Sierra to a complete stop.

The 2020 Sierra is also capable of supporting SiriusXM’s next generation audio entertainment platform. Available SiriusXM with 360L combines satellite and streaming to deliver more channels and choices than before, giving drivers and their passengers more control over what they listen to and when, and improving listeners’ ability to discover more great content across SiriusXM.

Propulsion system advancements

New for 2020, the 10-speed automatic transmission is now offered with the 5.3L
V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. The 5.3L V-8 and 10-speed automatic pairing will be standard on the Sierra Denali and Sierra AT4 and available on all four-wheel drive Sierras with the SLE trim level and above. The 10-speed automatic has more gears for more ratios, giving Sierra refined performance and outstanding shift quality.

The previously announced available 3.0L Duramax inline-six turbo-diesel engine will pair with the 10-speed automatic as well, bringing class-leading horsepower and torque figures. The 3.0L Duramax produces an SAE-certified 277 horsepower and 624 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque.

Beyond delivering class-leading figures, the inherently balanced nature of an inline-six engine also delivers remarkable on-road refinement, perfect for Sierra Denali owners who expect Professional Grade refinement in every aspect of their truck.

The 3.0L Duramax delivers the maximum 624 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque at just 1500 rpm, perfectly suiting the engine for off-road use in the Sierra AT4. That amount of torque at such a low engine speed — and the truck’s driving range — adds another level of capability to the Sierra’s most off-road-focused package ever.

The 3.0L Duramax will be available on Denali, AT4, SLT, Elevation and SLE models.

Continued technological excellence

The Sierra continues to offer a multitude of innovative features, including:

  • World’s first MultiPro Tailgate – The most innovative pickup tailgate ever, with six unique functions and positions offering enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation and easy access to items in the box.
  • GMC-exclusive CarbonPro Pickup Box – The industry’s first carbon fiber pickup box, developed to increase durability, efficiency and functionality while offering best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance.
  • Multi-Colour Head-Up Display – This segment-first Head-Up Display projects key, customizable vehicle data on the windshield on a 15-inch-diagonal display.
  • Rear Camera Mirror – The segment-first Rear Camera Mirror offers an available dual-function interior rear-view mirror with a camera view display that provides a wide view unobstructed by common visual obstructions like occupants or cargo. This next generation system features the ability to tilt or zoom the view.

The 2020 Sierra Denali features an Adaptive Ride Control suspension system designed to provide premium driving refinement with exceptional responsiveness. It provides continuous ride damping by employing sophisticated sensors to monitor road conditions and chassis responses in real time, enabling adjustments to active dampers every two milliseconds.

Design and refinement

At a glance, the ’20 Acadia distinguishes itself with a new grille, new front and rear fascias and GMC’s signature C-shaped lighting.
An all-new Acadia AT4 expands the reach of GMC’s newest sub-brand. Its bold styling cues, including a black chrome-accented grille, add a rugged, off-road-inspired design to the Acadia range. A 3.6L V-6 engine producing 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque and a twin clutch AWD system are standard to the AT4. Unique 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires are also standard, with 20-inch wheels available.

Additional design and refinement enhancements for the 2020 Acadia include:

  • New 18- and 20-inch wheel designs depending on the trim.
  • Outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals (power-folding feature standard on Denali and available on SLT trim).
  • Hands-free power liftgate with GMC logo projection standard on SLT, AT4 and Denali.
  • Redesigned center console with enhanced storage space.
  • Unique Denali interior color scheme with new, open-pore wood decor.

Innovative engine technology

A new 2.0L Turbo engine is standard on SLT and Denali models, expanding the Acadia’s propulsion choices for customers and adding a new dimension to its performance.
It leverages GM’s innovative tripower valvetrain technology to vary valve lift across the rpm band, optimizing performance for varied driving demands:
  • High valve lift for maximum power.
  • Low valve lift for a greater balance of power and efficiency.
  • Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) disables two of the cylinders in light load conditions to optimize efficiency.
The tripower valvetrain complements the turbocharging system to make the most of the engine’s available power at all speeds. The turbo is a dual-scroll design developed to enhance low-speed torque delivery. Peak torque is available from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm, for an exceptional feeling of responsiveness.
The engine is rated at a GMC-estimated 230 horsepower (172 kW) and 258 lb-ft of torque (350 Nm).
Both the proven 2.5L I-4 and the 3.6L V-6 engines remain standard or optional equipment for the 2020 Acadia dependent on trim level selected. All engine offerings feature a stop/start deactivation switch.

New nine-speed automatic and Electronic Precision Shift

A new nine-speed automatic replaces the previous six-speed automatic as the standard transmission for the 2.0L, 2.5L and 3.6L engines offered in the 2020 Acadia. The nine-speed’s additional clutches and gears offer better optimized acceleration and efficiency, and engine noise is reduced during cruising for greater refinement.
The 2020 Acadia is the latest GMC with Electronic Precision Shift, which enables more storage room in the center console by replacing the conventional transmission shifter with an electronically controlled gear selection consisting of intuitive push buttons and pull triggers.

New GMC infotainment system and additional technologies

As connectivity continues to grow in importance for crossover customers, the 2020 Acadia delivers the latest GMC infotainment system that is more intelligent and more intuitive. It offers users improved voice recognition, a higher resolution touchscreen and a simplified interface that requires fewer steps for some tasks, along with simpler screen layouts inspired by the latest smartphone technology.
This more user-friendly system, with an 8-inch-diagonal screen, also incorporates several new and enhanced features:
  • Personal profile allows users to tailor the infotainment system to their preferences, including audio, available navigation (requires subscription to compatible Connected Services) and climate settings, and even transfer those preferences to another GM vehicle with a compatible infotainment system. Up to four profiles can be assigned to the system and they can be assigned to the Acadia’s key fobs, automatically resetting the preferences for the incoming driver.
  • All-new Navigation interface with “one shot” destination entry feature, improved Route Guidance functionality and personalized settings.
  • Connected Navigation offers real-time updates, as well as Predictive Navigation and additional information provided by a cloud database. (Feature requires a Connected Navigation trial or subscription and connectivity.)
  • USB-C ports. Two new USB-C charging ports are integrated in the front and rear of the center console. That brings the number of ports in the Acadia to five, including a USB-A charging port for the third-row seating area.

Additional new and enhanced technologies on the 2020 Acadia include:

ProGrade Trailering Technology

First introduced with the 2019 Sierra light duty, the ProGrade Trailering System leverages technology advancements to offer additional features and functionality for the 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty.

"Trailering is the most important consideration for Sierra Heavy Duty customers, and the new features and technologies in the 2020 Sierra HD make it easier than ever to hitch a trailer and tow it confidently," said Jaclyn McQuaid, vehicle chief engineer, Heavy Duty Trucks. "We've developed this new truck to offer the greatest trailering experience ever offered by GMC."

An available class-leading 15 unique camera views, including an industry-first transparent trailer view, help optimize the driver's view around the truck and compatible trailers to provide added confidence when towing. The revolutionary transparent trailer feature uses the tailgate-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer. The resulting display helps the driver to virtually see through the trailer, a benefit when navigating parking lots, merging into traffic or making tight turns.

Owners of the 2020 Sierra HD will have access to available smart trailer technology designed to allow access to select features of the iN∙Command® control system from ASA Electronics through the myGMC mobile app, either on compatible Android and iOS smartphones or on the vehicle's infotainment system via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.  Similar to the features of a smart home, the iN∙Command® control system acts as the central hub of operations to monitor and control an array of systems in trailers equipped with the next-generation technology. Depending on how a compatibly equipped trailer is configured, owners of the 2020 Sierra HD may be able to turn on the trailer's air conditioning or water heater, check water and holding tank levels, or monitor fuel levels on trailers equipped with generators — all before arriving at their destination.

The ProGrade Trailering System also includes an in-vehicle Trailering App with Trailer Light Test, Trailer Electrical Diagnostics, Trailer Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring, Pre- Maintenance Reminders and Departure Checklist. Many of the Trailering app's functions, including the lighting test and pre-departure checklist, are also available with the myGMC mobile app, a feature that offers great convenience when outside the truck or trailer.

Additional available technologies and hardware to aid trailering include:
  • Auto Electric Park Brake to automatically apply the parking brake to help maintain truck position when hitching.

Bigger and bolder

The 2020 Sierra HD has a commanding, powerful design rooted in a new architecture with larger proportions. It is taller and longer, with a more confident stance defined by a bold design that epitomizes GMC's signature refinement and technologically driven attention to detail.

"We took every opportunity to visually express the strength and capability that lies beneath the surface," says Matt Noone, director of GMC exterior design. "The elevated hood line, the strong shoulders, the striking front grille — these cues communicate the strength and performance that have been engineered and built into each and every Sierra Heavy Duty."

The all-new Sierra HD is highlighted by new signature lighting, including prominent "light blades" that deliver LED illumination for the daytime running lamps. LEDs are also used for the headlamps, taillamps, available fog lamps and other illuminative elements, including the available roof marker lights standard on all dual-rear-wheel HDs and all Sierra HD Denalis except where prohibited by law.

Inside, the Sierra HD's new interior has best-in-class front head- and legroom (maximum), with Crew Cab models. A higher seating position complements the truck's taller profile to offer a confident view from behind the wheel. Additional optimized ergonomics emphasize easy, intuitive interaction with the vehicle's available technologies, such as a heavy-duty segment-first head-up display and GMC's latest touchscreen infotainment systems.

Denali-exclusive materials — including premium leather-appointed seating, authentic open-pore wood trim and dark-finish aluminum decor — raise the interior's refinement. The leather appointments have a distinctive, large-pebbled grain with a contrasting stitch pattern that is premium in appearance and touch without sacrificing durability, and the wood trim features an open-pore texture evocative of hand-planed furniture.

Compared to the current model, the new Sierra Heavy Duty has:
  • A longer wheelbase, a taller, more dominant hood line and taller overall height.
  • A larger grille and complementing functional hood scoop to feed an advanced cooling system for the Duramax turbo diesel.
  • Class-leading heavy-duty cargo bed volume and 12 corner tie-downs with a new, available 120-volt power outlet.
  • One-inch-lower bed lift-in height compared to the 2019 Sierra Heavy Duty, providing easier loading and fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailer hitching.
  • New, segment-exclusive cargo bed side steps on all box styles, located in front of the rear wheel openings, that complement integrated CornerSteps in the rear bumper to improve access to the cargo area.
  • World's first six-function MultiPro tailgate available on all trim levels and standard on SLT, AT4 and Denali.

All-new Sierra AT4 HD: Refined HD Capability Off-Road

The all-new 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty AT4 continues the AT4 brand's growth with a distinctive off-road identity to complement its robust HD capability. Driven by dark chrome exterior finishes and contemporary detailing, Sierra HD AT4 features front and rear bumpers and a grille surround finished in body colour. The bold grille design, with its rugged texture, is finished in black chrome and set off by the AT4's distinctive red vertical recovery hooks.

The athletic interior also carries AT4-specific darkened trim, including dark-tinted and textured aluminum finishes on the steering wheel, centre stack and sill plates, as well as a unique Jet Black interior with Kalahari colour accents in the seats and live stitching. Leather-appointed seating, with mini-perforated inserts and embroidered AT4 badging on the headrests, along with all-weather floor liners, is standard delivering durability with uncompromising comfort.

The new Sierra AT4 Heavy Duty's off-road capabilities are rooted in a unique suspension and supporting technologies that include:
  • Off-road suspension, Rancho Shocks, skid plates, Eaton locking rear differential.
  • Eighteen-inch wheels wrapped with Michelin all-terrain tires, with 20-inch wheels available.
  • Traction Select System with specific Off-Road mode.
  • Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist.
  • Segment-exclusive 15-inch diagonal Head-Up Display with Off-Road Inclinometer.
  • HD Surround Vision for low-speed views of vehicle surroundings.

Confident trailering power

GMC's legendary Duramax turbo diesel and Allison Transmission pairing continues to offer the ultimate in towing confidence.

The proven Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine offers high torque, high power, low noise and exceptional durability. For the 2020 Sierra HD, the Duramax offers an SAE-certified 445 horsepower and 1233 Nm (910 lb-ft) of torque. This already powerful engine performs more efficiently thanks to increased cooling capacity delivered in part by improved air induction. A dual-path intake system draws dense, cool air through both the prominent hood scoop and the larger front grille.

The new Sierra HD marks the introduction of an all-new 10-speed Allison automatic transmission — the first-ever offered in the heavy-duty pickup segment. The all-new 10-speed transmission with closer gear spacing allows the engine to operate in an optimal range at all times with varying load and terrain conditions.

The bigger frame, stronger propulsion and smarter technologies are expected to deliver dramatically greater towing capacity than previous models, well in excess of 13,607 kilograms (30,000 pounds). More details regarding an all-new gas engine and trailering capabilities will be announced shortly.
