Washing Your Vehicle in Winter

Washing Your Vehicle in Winter

Have you ever been driving around town in the middle of winter and noticed a sparkling clean vehicle rolling by that grabs your attention?  Then, you start asking yourself questions like; When should I wash my vehicle in the winter?  How often should I wash my vehicle in the winter?

You're not alone!  The topic of winter vehicle washing has endless opinions, but automotive experts agree on two basic guidelines;

  • Wash your vehicle when it is dirty.
  • Wash your vehicle when it's warm enough.

Sure, if it's several degrees below the freezing point and you park your vehicle outside most of the time, you risk having a; door, door lock or window freezing.  But, since most vehicles now have remote door locks, it's not a big deal. Using the proper lubricant to protect your locks and door seals can help prevent this form happening.

Safety always comes first, if your vehicle is extremely dirty and you are having visibility issues, it's time to pay a visit to your favorite self-serve coin wash or automated car wash. Always use brush-less washes when possible!

When daytime temperatures are around or above the freezing point, experts agree you should keep on top of washing your vehicle because you never know when the weather will change for the worse.  If you don't have temperature controlled indoor parking, try washing your vehicle earlier in the day and keep it parked in a sunny location instead of a shaded one.

Don't be afraid to wash your vehicle in the winter months.  Regular washing helps to prevent corrosion, not only in the winter, but year round.
