Celebrate New Years Eve in Edmonton
From fireworks to a frenzy of dancing, beach parties to Beatles cover bands, you've got options this New Year's Eve in Edmonton.
Go downtown:
What: It's a classic for a reason — head to Churchill Square on Thursday evening for free festivities, including kid-friendly crafts and entertainment, live music, hay rides, free skate rentals, fire pits, food concessions and, of course, fireworks. Keep in mind: nearby road closures will go into effect at 1 p.m., so public transit is likely the way to go.
When? Event runs from 7 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. The fireworks happen at midnight.
Fireworks outside the core:
What: For those who would rather avoid the crowds or stay closer to home, consider this your firework cheat sheet:
- St. Albert: The fireworks will go off at Mission Park at 8:30 p.m. sharp.
- Strathcona County: A full afternoon of events at Broadmoor Lake Park, Community Centre and Festival Place culminates in fireworks at 8 p.m.
- Stony Plain: Family Fest runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heritage Park, with fireworks at 8:45 p.m.
Stay indoors:
What: Although Environment Canada is forecasting a mild evening, here are some ways you can avoid winter completely:
- New Year's Eve Family Beach Ball: Head to the West Edmonton Mall Waterpark, where you can pretend you're on vacation somewhere much warmer than Alberta.
- Countdown at the Conservatory: Ring in 2016 a little early with an afternoon at the Muttart pyramids.
- Oilers vs. Anaheim: Do the ice thing but indoors at Rexall Place — the game starts at 7 p.m.
- Laugh out loud: Howie Miller will headline a special New Year's Eve show at Yuk Yuks starting at 10:30 p.m.
- Pub Crawl: You've got several options if you're looking to get mobile with your Molson this Thursday.
- Take in a show: Despite a temporary eviction, Teatro La Quindicina is keeping the party going with a one-of-a-kind event on New Year's.
Dinner and dance:
What: How about a little end-of-the-year dance party?
- Family Dance: Shake your groove thing all night long at a family-friendly affair in Devon.
- Gatsby Gala: Dance in old-timey style at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald.
- Brewmaster's Dinner & Dance: Tickets to the dinner portion of this event held at Craft Beer Market are sold out, but you can still get in on the dance.
A little night music:

The Day after:
What: For those wanting to start 2016 with a plan, here are some options:
