Winter Emergency Kit

Winter Emergency Kit

Yes... it's a funny photo.  If it's real, hopefully nobody was hurt.

We all know how important it is to be prepared for winter driving, but how many of us actually have a proper winter emergency kit in our vehicle should something happen?  The number is surprisingly low, it's estimated that only ONE in every 9 of us are properly prepared.

Slippery or snow-covered roads, reduced visibility and bitter cold: these are all conditions that can make driving difficult and even dangerous during cold weather months. Winter also brings an increased risk of getting stuck in your car, so dress warmly before heading out.

Since we all know how important it is to be prepared, let's get to the list of the important items we should have in our winter emergency kit that we keep in our vehicle all winter long;

  • Food (snacks that won's spoil)
  • Water (use plastic bottles)
  • Blankets
  • Extra clothing
  • Seatbelt cutter
  • Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush
  • Candle in a deep can and matches
  • Wind‑up flashlight
  • Whistle
  • Sand, salt or non-clumping cat litter
  • List of emergency contacts

A few other items you should consider keeping in your vehicle all year around;

  • First aid kit
  • Antifreeze and windshield washer fluid
  • Tow rope
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning light or road flares

Remember, being prepared is our best defence in an emergency situation.
