GMC Sierra All Mountain Edition

GMC Sierra All Mountain Edition

GMC Canada has been a proud partner of Whistler Blackcomb for almost 30 years. To commemorate our partnership and draw attention to the only truck helping to move mountains at Whistler Blackcomb we've built the GMC Sierra "All Mountain" Edition... it's big, it's bold and it's capable of climbing the steepest mountain grade, even in the harshest weather conditions.

In addition, we've also built the GMC Sierra "All Mountain" Edition 2.0 that will be on tour during the 2017 Auto Show Tour. It's bigger, bolder and more capable…and sure to draw great attention to GMC Sierra during this year's show tour. GMC Sierra All Mountain Edition 2.0 was built with 175 Series Mattracks, 12" lift kit, virtually every imaginable GMC accessory plus more!

In addition to the GMC Sierra "All Mountain" Edition trucks, we've increased our visibility at Whistler Blackcomb (winter & summer) by investing in many high profile and high traffic locations:

  • New GMC race centre branding and other on hill branding
  • The new GMC Denali Gondolas
  • The new GMC Mountain Bike Pump Track (summer activation)
  • The new GMC Landmark Gondola (located at the most iconic photo location)

Watch the live presentation and see the GMC All-Mountain for the first time!

Winter Safety Indoors and Out

Winter Safety Indoors and Out

Canadian winters are famous for being cold. The mercury keeps dropping, and suddenly, the bears aren't the only ones hibernating!

While it's true that many of us spend more time indoors in the winter, there are also those who embrace the outdoors, the snow and cooler temperatures.

For many parts of Canada, winter can mean bitter cold and winter storms that bring high winds, icy rain, or heavy snowfall.

This winter, get prepared for whatever the season will bring, whether you are indoors or out.

Follow these FIVE tips for staying safe in a Canadian winter:

Get informed and go outdoors.
Are you eagerly awaiting your chance to hit the slopes? Dreaming of making tracks with snowshoes? Check out AdventureSmart.ca to help you plan for a safe and enjoyable outing, whatever your passion. AdventureSmart.ca encourages everyone to follow the three T's: Trip planning, training and taking the essentials for any outdoor adventure. Here are some key tips for winter adventures:

  • Before heading out, complete a trip plan and leave it with friends or family. You can find a template online at AdventureSmart.ca
  • Get trained for your adventure and stay within your limits.
  • Take survival essentials with you and equipment like a communications alerting device in case of an emergency. In avalanche terrain, for example, essential equipment includes a probe, beacon and shovel.
  • Wear a helmet when skiing, skating, snowboarding and snowmobiling. Dress in layers to avoid hypothermia and keep your head, ears and hands covered to prevent frostbite.

Stay safe indoors
Winter is a busy season for fires in Canada. That's why it's important to be mindful of fire prevention and safety. Make sure you have working smoke alarms, don't leave burning candles unattended and if a pot catches fire while cooking, put a lid on it.

Check your family emergency kit
You likely have some basic emergency kit items already in your home, such as a flashlight, battery-operated radio, food, water and blankets. The key is to make sure they are organized, easy to find and easy to carry (in a suitcase with wheels or in a backpack) in case you need to evacuate your home.

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle
Prepare an emergency kit and keep it in your vehicle. Refresh the supplies for winter. For example, add an extra blanket or new food items.

Check weather reports
When severe winter weather threatens, Environment Canada issues special alerts to notify Canadians in affected areas so that they can take steps to protect themselves and their property. Check out Environment Canada's page on winter weather to learn more about the various weather alerts

Winter may be cold, but it doesn't have to be dangerous - stay warm, safe and enjoy your winter, inside and out with your friends at Western GMC Buick!

The Dangers of Ice

What You Need to Know About The Dangers of Ice

In Alberta and throughout Canada, many of our favorite outdoor activities take place near or on the ice. Ice usually appears on our lakes in mid to late fall and can remain well into the spring. As much as we love to skate, toboggan, and fish, ice over cold lake water can pose some serious, life threatening dangers.

Ice Factors

Many factors affect ice thickness including: type of water, location, the time of year and other environmental factors such as:

  • Water depth and size of body of water.
  • Currents, tides and other moving water.
  • Chemicals including salt.
  • Fluctuations in water levels.
  • Logs, rocks and docks absorbing heat from the sun.
  • Changing air temperature.
  • Shock waves from vehicles traveling on the ice.

Ice Colour

The colour of ice may be an indication of its strength.

  • Clear blue ice is strongest.
  • White opaque or snow ice is half as strong as blue ice. Opaque ice is formed by wet snow freezing on the ice.
  • Grey ice is unsafe. The grayness indicates the presence of water.

Minimum ice thickness for clear hard ice should be:

  • 10 cm for walking or skating alone
  • 12 cm for skating parties or games
  • 12 cm for snowmobiles.
  • 20+ cm for one small vehicle
  • 30+ cm for one medium vehicle
  • Check with local authorities before heading out. Avoid going out on ice at night.

When You Are Alone On Ice

If you get into trouble on ice and you're by yourself:

  • Call for help.
  • Resist the immediate urge to climb back out where you fell in. The ice is weak in this area.
  • Use the air trapped in your clothing to get into a floating position on your stomach.
  • Reach forward onto the broken ice without pushing down. Kick your legs to push your torso on the ice.
  • When you are back on the ice, crawl on your stomach or roll away from the open area with your arms and legs spread out as far as possible to evenly distribute your body weight. Do not stand up! Look for shore and make sure you are going in the right direction.
When you are with others on ice:
  • Rescuing another person from ice can be dangerous. The safest way to perform a rescue is from shore.
  • Call for help. Consider whether you can quickly get help from trained professionals (police, fire fighters or ambulance) or bystanders.
  • Check if you can reach the person using a long pole or branch from shore – if so, lie down and extend the pole to the person.
  • If you go onto ice, wear a PFD and carry a long pole or branch to test the ice in front of you. Bring something to reach or throw to the person (e.g. pole, weighted rope, line or tree branch).
  • When near the break, lie down to distribute your weight and slowly crawl toward the hole.
  • Remaining low, extend or throw your emergency rescue device (pole, rope, line or branch) to the person.
  • Have the person kick while you pull them out.
  • Move the person to a safe position on shore or where you are sure the ice is thick. Signal for help.

The Western Team asks you to consider sharing this valuable information to help ensure a safe and fun winter season!

Buick Global Sales Pass 1 Million

2016 Buick Global Sales Pass 1 Million at Record Pace

Through September, global Buick deliveries worldwide totaled 1,046,746 vehicles for 2016. At no other point in the brand’s 113 years of business has this milestone been reached so quickly. Compared to the same span in 2015, nearly 200,000 more customers have taken delivery of a new Buick car or SUV.

Buick’s year-over-year growth of 23 percent is the highest in the industry for major brands selling vehicles in both North America and China. With three months left in the year, Buick is on track for its fourth consecutive all-time global sales record.

“Demand worldwide continues to grow for attainable Buick luxury and the beautiful, quiet and comfortable cars and SUVs we offer,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick Sales, Service and Marketing. “We complement that driving experience with customer service that consistently ranks among the highest in the industry.”

Buick currently ranks as the second-largest passenger-car brand in China and outsells key competitors including Acura, Audi, Infiniti and Lincoln in North America. In Canada, year-to-date retail sales are up by 17%.

Buick’s modern, smart SUV lineup is fueling the nameplate’s international growth. The compact Envision is on pace for more than 200,000 global sales in its second year in the market. Sales in North America began in May and demand has been strong, with Envisions averaging just 23 days on dealer lots. That’s far below the industry average of 65 days.

The Encore small SUV has increased its global sales each year since its launch less than four years ago. Buick SUV retail sales in Canada had the best month ever in September with an increase of 41%. A redesigned 2017 Encore just started arriving at dealerships with a standard 8-inch touchscreen, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ― a suite of connectivity features not offered by any competitor.

Recent U.S. Buick buyers cite quality and value among their top reasons for purchase, and the brand continues to provide top safety ratings as well. In September, the new Envision was given a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ― the organization’s highest rating.

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween Safety Tips

With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighbourhoods across Canada, the team at Western GMC Buick would like to share some safety tips to help parents prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday.

Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices can keep events safer and more fun! Below, you will find some valuable Halloween Safety Tips provided by The Canadian Red Cross!

  • Costumes should be light-coloured and flame resistant with reflective strips so that children are more easily seen at night.  (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
  • Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping.
  • Remind children to keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)
  • Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover the eyes.
  • Remind children to walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks - not in the street.
  • Explain to children that calls should be made along one side of the street first and then the other, and that it's best to cross the street only at intersections or crosswalks.
  • Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
  • Provide yourself or the children with a flashlight to see better and to be better seen.
  • Have children plan their route and share it with you and the family.
  • Trick or Treaters should travel in groups of four or five.  Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Visit homes that have the porch light on.
  • Make sure children know they should accept treats at the door and must not get into cars or enter the homes or apartments of strangers.
  • Remind children not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home.  And candy should not be eaten if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.
  • Make sure you and your children know where the Block Parent houses are located in the neighborhood.
  • Set agreed-to boundaries with your children.  Explain the importance of staying within them and arriving home on time.
  • Share an anti-bullying message with your neighbours. Print this PDF and include it when you hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.
Your friends at Western GMC Buick wish you and your family a safe and Happy Halloween 2016!

Buick Avenir Sub-Brand

Avenir Sub-Brand to Represent Highest Expression of Buick Luxury

Across continents, a growing set of new customers are discovering unexpected and attainable luxury experiences from Buick. Soon, those customers will be introduced to a new Avenir sub-brand designed to grow with the needs of future luxury buyers.
The Avenir sub-brand is inspired by Buick’s evolving customer base. The brand has grown quickly with female buyers expecting a high-end experience and premium quality.
This year, an unprecedented number of new global products such as the Envision compact SUV, 2017 LaCrosse sedan, and 2017 Encore small SUV offer an elevated luxury experience that’s encouraging new car buyers to reassess what they know about Buick.
“Through the first half of 2016, Buick has been the industry’s fastest-growing major international brand, and Avenir is key to future growth and delivering on the high expectations of new customers coming to our showrooms,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick Sales, Service and Marketing. “Avenir will be Buick’s signature. The highest expression of the luxury experiences we’re delivering now and in the future.”
Avenir vehicles will add distinct touches to Buick’s timeless, sculpted designs, including a three-dimensional mesh grille, large-diameter wheels, and unique trim finishes. Inside, Avenir models will enhance the brand’s quiet, inviting environment with unique seat details, modern trim materials and Avenir script identification.
The name “Avenir,” French for “future,” is taken from the award-winning concept sedan from 2015. That concept and this year’s Avista coupe concept — from which the new sub-brand borrows its grille pattern — have served as guideposts for designers sketching and modeling Buick’s future.
Keep an eye on the Western GMC Buick Blog for the latest information on Avenir!

2017 GMC Duramax 6.6L Diesel

All-New 2017 GMC Duramax 6.6L Diesel

When it comes to horsepower from a diesel engine, the 2017 GMC Sierra HD tops the segment with an SAE-certified 445 hp (332 kW) from an all-new Duramax 6.6L V-8 turbo-diesel. And when it comes to the torque that enables effortless trailering and hauling, it also delivers more than ever: an SAE-certified net 910 lb.-ft. of torque (1,234 Nm) to make easier work of the heaviest loads.

Along with a 19 percent increase in max torque over the current Duramax 6.6L and segment-best horsepower, the redesigned turbo-diesel’s performance is quieter and smoother, for greater refinement and more confidence when trailering or hauling.

The new Duramax 6.6L is a next-generation redesign of the venerable turbo-diesel engine and incorporates a new, GM-developed control system. The Duramax’s signature low-rpm torque production hasn’t changed, offering 90 percent of peak torque at a low 1,550 rpm and sustaining it through 2,850 rpm — an attribute that contributes to the Sierra HD’s confident pulling power.

A new, patent-pending vehicle air intake system — distinguished on the Sierra HD by a bold hood scoop — drives cool, dry air into the engine for sustained performance and cooler engine temperatures during difficult conditions such as trailering on steep grades. Cooler air helps the engine run better under load, especially in conditions where engine and transmission temperatures can rise quickly. That allows the Duramax to maintain more power and vehicle speed when trailering in the toughest conditions.

Driveline enhancements were made to increase strength and enhance durability, including a stronger front prop shaft and larger U-joints compared to previous Duramax-equipped Sierra HD models.

Additional highlights include:
  • New full-length, damped steel oil pan that contributes to quietness
  • New rocker cover/fuel system acoustical treatments
  • B20 bio-diesel compatibility
  • SAE-certified 445 net horsepower (332 kW) at 2,800 rpm
  • SAE-certified 910 net lb.-ft. of torque (1,234 Nm) at 1,600 rpm
  • The new Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine is produced with locally and globally sourced parts at GM’s manufacturing facility in Moraine, Ohio. It will be available in the Sierra HD in early 2017.

2017 Sierra HD lineup

When it comes to delivering the capability on which GMC’s reputation was forged, Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD models — including Sierra Denali HD — are offered with gas and Duramax diesel propulsion systems. They enable a maximum conventional trailering rating of 9,072 kilograms (20,000 lbs) and a max fifth-wheel/gooseneck trailering rating of 10,568 kilograms (23,300 lbs).

Regular, double cab and crew cab models are offered across the lineup, with the premium Sierra Denali HD — the ultimate expression of GMC’s Professional Grade ethos — offered exclusively as a crew cab. It matches GMC’s do-it-all capability with distinctive styling elements, premium materials and upscale interior amenities.

Additionally, the All Terrain HD premium off-road package is the most capable off-pavement model, featuring unique exterior details and 18-inch chrome aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires, the Z71 suspension with Rancho twin-tube shocks and more.

In addition to the new Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel engine, the 2017 Sierra HD lineup offers Teen Driver, which allows parents to set controls, review driving habits and encourage safe driving habits when they are not in the vehicle.

Additional vehicle highlights:
  • An available Gooseneck/5th Wheel Trailering Prep Package makes Sierra HD models ready to tow larger trailers right from the factory.
  • Digital Steering Assist power steering on select models senses speed to enable ease of handling at low speeds and improved steering feel at highway speeds. It helps make trailering easier when parking or on the road.
  • HID projector-beam headlamps with GMC-signature LED lighting is standard on all models
  • Available wireless phone charging (standard on Denali)
  • Available remote locking tailgate (standard on Denali)

“Establishing a benchmark for a premium midsize pickup was our goal with the Canyon, and PickupTruck.com’s insights affirm our instincts,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “The Canyon’s quiet cabin, premium design and materials make it a maneuverable solution for customers who want the capability of a pickup with the modern amenities customers expect from GMC.”

GMC Canyon with Broader 2017 Lineup!

GMC Canyon with Broader 2017 Lineup!

Building on the momentum of an 12-percent sales increase so far this year, GMC announces a broader 2017 GMC Canyon lineup led by the new, range-topping Canyon Denali and new, off-road-inspired All Terrain X.

Like all GMC Denali models, the new Canyon Denali is distinguished by chrome exterior details and unique wheels, along with exclusive interior trim and content. It also features a new 3.6L V-6 engine that’s paired with a segment-first eight-speed automatic transmission.

This new propulsion system is offered across the 2017 Canyon lineup, including the new All Terrain X package, which takes the popular All Terrain model farther down the trail, with Goodyear DuraTrac all-terrain tires, all-weather floor liners and more.

“Canyon continues to carve out its own niche as the only premium truck in the midsize segment,” said Mike Speranzini, brand director of GMC in Canada. “With a broader 2017 Canyon lineup and the redesigned Acadia, GMC is offering more choices for finding the premium truck or SUV that matches customers’ design preferences and capability needs.”

Additional new and revised features for the 2017 Canyon lineup include:

  • New IntelliLink radio with 7-inch-diagonal colour touchscreen
  • Standard Teen Driver Mode through IntelliLink
  • Available heated steering wheel
  • Exterior colours Dark Slate Metallic, Mineral Metallic and Red Quartz Metallic

Canyon Denali

In addition to its Denali-signature chrome grille, the 2017 Canyon Denali features specific wheels — 20-inch ultra-bright machined aluminum with painted accents — along with tubular chrome assist steps, polished exhaust tip (V-6 only) and spray-on bedliner.

Inside, a Jet Black interior features unique leather-appointed, heated and ventilated front seats — exclusive content in the Canyon lineup — along with unique instrument panel and console trim and Denali-logo sill plates and floor mats. Additional standard features include:

  • Heated steering wheel
  • GMC IntelliLink with Navigation and an 8-inch-diagonal colour touchscreen
  • 4G Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Automatic climate control
  • Full-colour driver information centre
  • Remote start
  • Bose® premium seven-speaker audio system
  • Two USB charging ports on the rear of the centre console and another inside the console
  • Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning

All Terrain X

This special version of the popular All Terrain package offered on the SLE model is the most off-road-capable Canyon for those who travel beyond the paved path. The X adds Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac P255/65R17 all-terrain tires and all-weather floor liners to All Terrain content, which includes:

  • Off-road suspension and transfer case shield
  • Body-colour grille surround and rear step bumper
  • Unique interior with red stitching and heated front seats
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Unique 17-inch aluminum wheels
  • 3-inch-diameter round step bars
  • Spray-on bedliner
  • Remote start
  • Automatic climate control and sliding rear window

The All Terrain model requires the new 3.6L V-6/eight-speed automatic propulsion system. The 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine is available.

3.6L V-6 and eight-speed automatic

The new 3.6L/eight-speed propulsion system offers stronger, more confident acceleration and smoother shift performance than the Canyon’s previous V-6/six-speed combination. This new combination focuses on refining everyday driving performance, including accelerating from a stop, passing on the highway and cruising at a constant speed.

The 3.6L leverages technologies such as continuously variable valve timing, direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) to balance performance and efficiency. It is rated at an SAE-certified 308 hp (230 kW) and 275 lb-ft of torque (373 Nm).

Canyon’s new Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic complements the 3.6L with a technologically advanced design and control system that supports smoother, more refined performance. Smaller “steps” between the gears as the vehicle accelerates allow the transmission to shift quicker, with almost imperceptible upshifts.

The 8L45 eight-speed also has a wider 7.0 gear ratio that enables a numerically higher first gear ratio — helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering — and numerically lower overdrive ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway. A lower engine speed has two benefits: It can reduce fuel consumption to enhance efficiency and it reduces engine noise for a quieter cabin.

The new powertrain supports a 3,175 kilogram (7,000 lbs)max trailering rating that is second in the segment only to the Canyon’s available 2.8L Duramax diesel, which is rated at 7,700 pounds.

The 2017 model year updates, including the new V-6 and eight-speed combination, will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.

For more information on the GMC Canyon and the entire GMC lineup, contact the New Vehicle Sales Department at Western GMC Buick by phone at 780-486-3333, on our website or in person at 18325 Stony Plain Rd, Edmonton.

Fall Vehicle Tips

10 Tips To Get Your Vehicle Ready For Fall

It won’t be long before the weather gets iffy, and living in western Canada, it can creep up rather quickly!  Driving safely during the fall months requires more than just cautious driver behavior. Your vehicle also needs some attention.

Check the brakes and tires.  Inclement weather and associated road conditions and other hazards require good stopping power. That means good brakes and tires. If the tires have wear bars showing, say the experts, you need to replace the tires. Most good brake and tire shops will inspect the brakes and tires at no charge. Also check the tire pressure, as tire pressure drops when the outside temperatures plummet. Keep the pressure at levels recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Check the lights. Walk around the outside of the vehicle and check the operation of all lights: headlights, taillights, parking lights, brake lights and emergency flashers. Replace all broken bulbs and those that have stopped working. Make sure all lights are clean. If you own an older vehicle with sealed-beam headlamps, you might want to pony up for halogen lamps for improved visibility and safer driving.

Replace wiper blades. The purpose of wiper blades is to completely clear the windshield. Cracked or worn blades won’t do an adequate job. Check the blade’s rubber to ensure it is flexible and operate the wipers to see that the blades clear the glass. Replace worn blades.

Make sure heater/defroster work. Driving with an improperly working heater isn’t fun or safe. Driving with fogged-up windows is an accident waiting to happen. Check front and rear window defrosters to ensure proper working condition. If necessary, have heater and defroster systems repaired.

Have the battery checked. A fully charged battery is necessary to start the vehicle in cold weather. Have the battery and charging system inspected by a trained technician who can replace it if required. If you see signs of corrosion on the battery terminals or cable ends or if you spot loose connections, your battery needs attention.

Inspect under the hood. Looking under the hood will allow you to identify any obvious signs of wear or items that need replacing or fixing. Look for leaks, cracks or loose clamps in the cooling system and squeeze the hoses and replace any that are spongy-feeling or brittle. Inspect the underside of drive belts for fraying and replace as required. If you’ve noticed any engine noises, experienced sputtering or other engine problems, have a licensed mechanic thoroughly inspect the engine and make any necessary repairs.

Change oil and air filter. If the oil is dirty or you’re at your recommended oil change time, change the oil. Also check the air filter to ensure that it is clean enough to allow for proper operation. If you can’t see light through it when you hold it up to a 60-watt bulb, it’s time to replace the air filter.

Refill cooling system. Experts such as GM Service recommend checking the coolant level in the overflow tank when the engine is cold. If the level is too low, add a 50/50 solution of water and coolant to allow proper antifreeze capability. It may be necessary to refill the cooling system.

Check all fluid levels. This includes washer fluid, along with transmission, brake and power steering fluids. Make sure they are all at or above minimum safe levels and refill as necessary.

Get a good vehicle wash/detail. It may sound crazy, spiffing up your vehicle with an extra-special wash or even a detail, but when your vehicle is clean, it’s easier to spot any potential problems.

History of the Pontiac Fiero

Pontiac Fiero

In the past, Western GMC Buick was proud to sell (and continues to service,) GM's Pontiac Brand until it's retirement in 2010. Founded in 1926, Pontiac offered many cousin versions of Chevrolet automobiles and in more recent years some unique models, including; Aztek, Solstice and Fiero!

The Pontiac Fiero is a mid-engined sports car built by Pontiac from 1984 to 1988. The Fiero was designed by George Milidrag and Hulki Aldikacti as a sports car. The Fiero was the first two-seater Pontiac since the 1926 to 1938 coupes, and also the first and only mass-produced mid-engine sports car by a U.S. manufacturer. Many technologies incorporated in the Fiero design such as plastic body panels were radical for their time. Other features included hidden headlamps and, initially, integrated stereo speakers within the driver and passenger headrests.

A total of 370,168 Fieros were produced over the relatively short production run of five years; by comparison, 163,000 Toyota MR2s were sold in their first five years.

The word fiero means "proud" in Italian, and "wild", "fierce", or "ferocious" in Spanish. Alternative names considered for the car were Sprint (which ended up on a Chevrolet car instead) and Sunfire (a name which would later be applied to another Pontiac)

The Fiero 2M4 (two-seat, mid-engine, four-cylinder) was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1984. The 1984 Fiero was the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 for 1984, beating out the new 1984 Chevrolet Corvette for the honor.

The public had high expectations for the Fiero with its mid-engine layout and aggressive styling, which resembled exotic mid-engine sports cars like the Ferrari 308GTB. While initially garnering good reviews for its handling (Motor Trend 1984), the Fiero soon received negative reviews from other automotive critics who expected higher performance from a mid-engine two-seater. Despite the critical press, the Fiero sold well and although Pontiac operated three shifts at the factory during 1984, they could not keep up with initial demand.

By 1985, the oil crisis was long past and demand developed for a Fiero having more engine power and better sports car performance. Pontiac responded by introducing the GT model which included upgraded suspension tuning, wider tires, and a V6 engine having 43 hp (32 kW) more than the base four-cylinder.

Finally, in 1988, numerous changes were made to the Fiero to bring it in line with its original design. The most significant was a completely redesigned suspension (and parts of the space frame) to realize the potential of the mid-engine layout. The unique suspension included new two-piece brake calipers and upgraded brake rotors. These had been part of Fiero's initial design, but cost-cutting kept them from being implemented sooner.  The available I4 and V6 engines benefited from evolutionary improvements, but the planned availability of turbochargers and newer DOHC engines did not happen before production stopped.

In spite of the much-improved car which finally had realized its potential after years of mismanagement, GM ended production after the 1988 model year due to declining sales figures. Bad press and consumer sentiment frequently cited heavy media coverage of Fiero engine fires, as well as the poor reliability and performance of the 1984-1987 models.
